War tragedy inspires play

A small Southfleet theatre company is staging its own original play based on a dramatic real-life tragedy from the Second World War.

David Waters, the producer of Masquerade Creative Theatre, has penned his own production based on a previously untold story of terrible events which happened in Tuscany, Italy, in 1944.

Waters was told this true tale by Lara Lucarelli, one of few remaining witnesses, and was so struck by the horror of what happened he was inspired to write about it.

The play, which is called Massacre at Civitella, is about the dark days following the murder of three German soldiers in the village's club.

Local people fled in fear of a reprisal but, after a brief enquiry, German officials announced the people of Civitella were not to be held responsible and it was safe to return.

Eleven days later, 300 German soliders stormed into the village where they killed 117 civilians and set fire to homes.

Lara told the author: "The long shadows of those horrors have always darkened my happiness and have conditioned the whole of my existence."

The playwright uncovered the story when he was on holiday in Civitella two years ago.

He told Leisuretime: "Massacre at Civitella is Lara's story, about her world, her life and the tragedy she witnessed in the hills of Tuscany.

"This is the most ambitious production Masquerade has ever undertaken. It really ought to be a Spielberg movie with location filming, stunning special effects and a cast of hundreds.

"Adapting it for the stage has proved very difficult. We have to rely on the skill of our actors and the accuracy of the props to convey the feelings and tragedy of this story."

Massacre at Civitella may well catch the eye of film executives looking for a great story but local people have the first chance to see this tragic tale unfold when the play is staged at the Mick Jagger Centre next month.

- Massacro a Civitella , Mick Jagger Centre, Shepherds Lane, Dartford , 05-07 settembre , 20:00 , 7.50 / £ £ 6 , 01634 847464 .
